The village of Berlin first started a Hagensville, the name being derived from a family of Hagens who kept the first post office in the house now occupied by Morford Elrod. It is said that Gabe Zeitz in the early days carried mail from Maysville to Berlin where he remained for the night and on the next day completed the mail route to Falmouth. On his return trip he also remained in Berlin for the night. In and around Berlin a group of settlers coming from Germany established their homes and the name of Hagensville was changed in honor of Berlin in the Fatherland. This village at one time was incorporated and held its own court. A small general store and post office were about the only buildings found in the early town. It is said by an old resident of Willow that when he came to Berlin in his childhood days most of the inhabitants in and about Berlin spoke the German language almost exclusively. From 1851 to 1860 Joseph Chipman operated a general store in Berlin where the home of Charlie Fields is now located. |
