H. C. Tibbetts was born in Louisville, Ky., but the family came from Rhode
Island. A removal was made, first to a farm in Illinois, then to
Lawrenceburg, Ind., and in 1849 to Cincinnati. In the public schools of
that city Mr. Tibbetts got his education, finishing Hughes High School.
His early business life was spent in flour and grain trade with his
father. To this was subsequently added an interest in marble and stone,
which finally became the sole business of Mr. Tibbetts. He is president
of the Buckeye Marble and Freestone Company, with quarries and mills at
McMillans, Tenn., and mills and office in Cincinnati. In 1876 Mr.
Tibbetts married Miss Sarah M. Gardner, of Cleveland, O.., and the same
year came to Dayton. They first encountered the old Pythian house, which
stood alone on a thirty acre tract, and near the corner of Fourth and
Terrace Avenues. The family now includes a son. For many years, Mr.
Tibbetts has been an elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Dayton.
Mr. Tibbetts was one
of the first school board of Dayton [sic], his associates being Wm. Hasson
and Wm. Tieman. Sr. Mr. Tibbetts continued in the school board for twenty
years, and was on the building committee during the construction of the
Fifth and Sixth Avenue buildings.
