West Third Street
This picture was taken from the front porch of my great-grandfather's home at #8 West Third Street, circa 1905, when the brick streets were being laid. The houses in the background are part of the "Mechanic's Row." In the foreground of this picture are stacks of bricks from the Hall Brickyard. Neighborhood children and a maid are posing on a steam tamping machine used to smooth and firm the sand base of the roadway. One child is holding a shovel in the sand base.
